Sheridan, Indiana has a rich history. It was once the second largest town in Hamilton County behind Noblesville, the county seat. Sheridan grew slowly until the installation of the Monon Railroad in 1882 which stimulated a large commercial boom for the town. Sheridan was originally settled by the merchant and abolitionist, George Boxley. The Boxley Cabin, Sheridan’s most notable historic landmark has been meticulously preserved, and it still stands at the north end of town between the Sheridan Library and Veteran’s Park. Sheridan captures the vibe of Norman Rockwell and small-town living. Sheridan’s claim to its high school football legacy lives on with multiple IHSAA state titles. Sheridan offers many civic opportunities and is home to many clubs and organizations which provide the outreach and extension which makes the community proud. Sheridan is also the northern-most destination of the Monon Trail. Today, the Monon Trail can be traveled from downtown Indianapolis over 27 miles to Sheridan. The town is currently planning its completion of an additional section from 236th Street to downtown Sheridan where walkers and bikers will be able to enjoy shaved ice, coffee, or ice cream after visiting a few boutique stores.
